DEVOTIONAL DAY 12: THE LORD IS OUR PROVIDER

Updated: Oct 19

Day 12:

The Lord is our Provider

Verse: Exodus 16:21-"Each morning everyone gathered as much as he needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away."

Imagine waking up each day not to the sound of an alarm clock or the morning news but to the fresh provision of food spread across the ground by the hands of God Himself. The Israelites experienced this miracle daily in the wilderness. Manna (as it came to be known) was God's tangible reminder of His provision.

However, this miraculous bread came with specific instructions: Gather only what you need for the day. In essence, God was teaching His people daily dependence on Him. The moment they tried to hoard more than necessary, it rotted.

From the story of manna, we draw vital lessons:

  1. Daily Dependence: God desires us to lean on Him daily, not once a week or in emergencies. Every sunrise is a fresh invitation to trust Him anew. When I feel challenged in this area, I remind myself of the verse from Lamentations 3:22-23 where the Scriptures say God’s mercies are renewed each morning.

  1. Resisting Self-Reliance: It's easy to be lulled into a sense of self-sufficiency in today's world. We are rewarded for it, but the Israelites' experience reminds us that self-reliance leads to decay. Real sustenance comes only from God. He is our Source.

  1. God’s Perfect Provision: He knows exactly what we need for today. Not what we needed yesterday or what we might need tomorrow. Today. And He provides just that.

It’s humbling and sometimes frustrating to realize that no matter how many miracles we've witnessed, our human nature tends toward doubt. Like the Israelites, we forget yesterday's deliverance when today's challenges arise. Yet, in His grace, God doesn't scorn our frailty. Instead, He extends fresh mercy with each new day. He understands our struggles, and rather than condemning our weak faith, He continually invites us to lean on Him more.

Reflection:

  • What are the 'mannas' in your life – the daily provisions God graciously gives?

  • How have you tried to hoard God's blessings out of fear, and what was the result?

Prayer: Father, thank You for being my daily Provider. Forgive me for the times I doubt Your faithfulness even after countless demonstrations of Your love and care. Teach me to trust You more with each sunrise, knowing that You hold my every moment and need in Your hands. Let me be content with today's manna, resting in Your perfect provision. Amen.
