DEVOTIONAL DAY 13: WORSHIP AS WARFARE

Updated: Oct 19

Day 13:

Worship as Warfare

Verse: 2 Chronicles 20:22 - "As they began to sing and praise, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated." (NIV)

The spiritual realm is filled with mysteries our finite minds might struggle to grasp. One of these profound mysteries is the power of worship. I heard a sermon once that said something like this: “Stop praying and start praising.” The sermon's point was that our constant prayer for the same issue could signal doubt, but when we switch to praise, we signal to God that we have faith to believe He will answer our prayers. The story of King Jehoshaphat is an excellent example of this principle.

When faced with a great army, Jehoshaphat did the unthinkable. Instead of devising a military strategy or fortifying defenses, he appointed singers to go out at the head of the army, praising the beauty of God's holiness. This act may have seemed like a recipe for disaster in the natural, but in the spiritual, it was a formidable strategy.

As the people of Judah sang praises, God acted. The vast armies that should have overwhelmed them were confused and defeated. Swords, arrows, or the military did not achieve this victory; worship won it.

When we worship, several things happen:

  1. We declare God's sovereignty: Even in the face of adversity, worship reaffirms who God is — the Almighty, the One who reigns supreme over all situations.

  2. We shift our focus: In moments of distress, it's easy to be consumed by the magnitude of our problems. Worship redirects our gaze from our challenges to our mighty God.

  3. We unleash spiritual power. Just as with King Jehoshaphat’s army, our worship confounds the enemy. When we choose praise over panic, the spiritual forces that come against us are thrown into confusion.

  4. We create an atmosphere for God's presence: The Bible tells us that God inhabits the praises of His people (Psalm 22:3). As we worship, we invite His presence into our situation, bringing breakthroughs, peace, and victory.

Reflection:

  • Can you recall when worshiping God changed the atmosphere or clarified a challenging situation?

  • What barriers might prevent you from turning to worship when faced with battles? How can you work on breaking down these barriers?

Prayer:

Lord, teach me to wield the powerful weapon of worship, especially when facing battles. May my heart always be attuned to sing Your praises, knowing that as I lift Your name on high, You move on my behalf. Help me remember that victory doesn't always come in the ways I expect, but it always comes when I trust You. Amen.
