Day 8:
The Battle Belongs to God
Verse: Exodus 14:13-14 - "Moses answered the people, 'Do not be afraid. Stand firm, and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.'"
Imagine standing on the precipice of a great challenge, feeling the weight of despair, fear, and uncertainty, and then hearing the call to "be still." In adversity, our natural inclination often leans towards action — to fight or flee. Yet, God's instruction to the Israelites is counterintuitive: "Stand firm" and let Him handle the situation.
The backdrop of this Scripture is intense. The Israelites are cornered: Pharaoh's chariots are thundering closer, and the Red Sea stretches out, seemingly impassable. Panic is a reasonable reaction. But Moses, with divine assurance, encourages stillness. He doesn’t promise an army to defend them or a strategy to evade the Egyptians. Instead, he assures them of God’s intervention.
This story is a transformative lesson for us: Often, our battles are not ours to fight. They belong to the Lord. This doesn't negate our role or the necessity for action at times, but it reminds us of the power of divine intervention and the importance of trust and surrender.
In life, there are situations where we've done all we can, and the next step is unclear. In these moments of uncertainty, Exodus 14:13-14 encourages us to resist the urge to react out of fear or desperation. Instead, we are invited to stand firm in faith, rest in God's promises, and watch Him move mightily on our behalf. I know it can be hard to stand still and resist the temptation to “do something” in our strength. I have been there myself, but after being defeated multiple times when I have taken matters into my own hands, I have now learned to surrender it to God.
Reflection:
Are there battles you're currently facing that you've tried to handle on your own? How might "standing still" and allowing God to intervene change the course of your situation?
What does "being still" look like for you in practical terms? How can you create moments of stillness to hear from and rely on God in your daily life?
Prayer: Lord, teach me to discern when to act and when to stand still and trust in Your intervention. Help me remember that my battles are physical, emotional, and spiritual. Strengthen my faith to stand firm, even when the situation seems impossible, knowing that You are in control and fighting for me. Amen.
