How A Changed Mindset Changed my Situation

𝓦𝓮𝓮𝓴 5✨

One week or so before Christmas I embarked on a trip to Florida to take care of some urgent business. I had placed a property up for sale before moving to North Carolina and the broker had informed us to get back by a certain date so we could close. It was not the most convenient time (right before Christmas) but we wanted to put that chapter behind us.


With my car packed and our minds made up we headed out for the 10 hour drive down south. We began to anticipate the joy of the property closing and the extra funds we would have for the holidays, as well as the immense satisfaction of spending time with my son.

As fortune would have it, approximately 5 hours before I arrived in Florida, I received a frantic phone call from my broker stating that the closing was delayed until SOMETIME after Christmas! She wanted to know if we had already left (duh ) because if not we should wait since we would have to return to sign at a later date. This was infuriating and annoying at the least.


We arrived in Florida at approximately 8:00 pm that night, hungry, disappointed and frustrated. We pulled up to the pet friendly "hotel" my daughter had reserved for us through the non-refundable Hotwire site, only to find that it was really a motel that catered to, let's say this; there were some "ladies of the night" in the parking lot!


Already tired and frustrated, I felt like bursting into tears.

After letting off some quiet steam I called Hotwire and had them book me at another hotel nearby, only to find out after checking in that it was just a bigger, newer, shinier version of the one we just left. Altogether not a good day. I wanted to return to Charlotte, but the one thing that kept me sane was the anticipation of seeing my son.


I knew I had to do something. I could not change the closing date and I could not change the crappy hotel. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐲 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞.


The Scripture from Romans 12:2 popped in my mind at that moment, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will."


I made a decision right there in my uncomfortable bed that night that I was going to make the best of this situation. That I was going to call upon the peace of God inside of me. I decided to be intentional about having fun and finding purpose in my disappointment. I immediately called a friend and made a date for coffee the next morning then went to bed.


The next day I went to my office building and cheerfully packed the remaining items. There were still quite a few office furniture and equipment that I was able to donate to a new entrepreneur who was starting a home based business. It was a blessing to him and his team, and a blessing to me as well.





Later on that day I received two uplifting phone calls. One call was an invitation to spend the rest of my time (with my pet) in the comforts of a home (with home cooked meals!), and the other call was from my broker letting me know that I can sign all paperwork for my closing so I did not have to return to Florida!


I believe when I decided to change my attitude, the energy around me changed. I was open for "good things" to come into my sphere. Whatever we focus on grows, and if we constantly focus on all that is bad we will continue to attract negative circumstances. The opposite is also true.


I will leave you with one final word from Scripture (Philippians 4:8) that I fall back on when things are going sideways; "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things."


As of this writing, my building closing was finalized and the funds came in time for New Year's Eve:)
